Visio Divina

Visio Divina is a Latin term meaning “divine seeing” or “sacred seeing.” This ancient Christian contemplative prayer practice engages images and artwork to usher the viewer into deeper imagination and communion with God. The Church has a long history of utilizing art, from painted Bible scenes in catacombs to illuminated manuscripts and the stations of the cross.

For some, including those who have experienced abuse entwined with religious language, this practice offers a prayer tradition that transcends traditional literacy and puts us in the pathway of beauty.

It has been an honor to offer this practice during narrative focused trauma care trainings at The Allender Center, and it would be an honor to share it with anyone else who may find it helpful.
